At the turn of the century, tycoons, politicians, and socialites flocked to Jekyll Island to revel in their own luxury and America’s burgeoning wealth. Our historic Georgia Club was described in the February 1904 issue of Munsey’s Magazine as “the richest, the most exclusive, the most inaccessible club in the world.” Its impressive members included such luminaries as J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller, Vincent Astor, Joseph Pulitzer, William K. Vanderbilt, and other recognizable names on the roster were Macy, Goodyear, and Gould.

Jekyll Island was purchased by the state of Georgia in 1947, and it became the Jekyll Island State Park. It was operated under the state park system until 1950, when it was transferred to the auspices of the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA), more able to operate as a business. The JIA board of directors is appointed by the governor of Georgia.

At 5,700 acres and a 33% limit on business development, Jekyll is the smallest of Georgia’s barrier islands, yet resplendent with moss draped live oaks, marshes and remote beaches with natural sand dunes and indigenous wildlife.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN 2013

March 28, 2013 Finally, after rescheduling this vacation twice due to two wrist surgeries, we left snowy NY and headed south.   Our first stop was in Christiansburg, VA to spend the night in a Cracker Barrel parking lot on our way to North Carolina.

March 29, 2013 Arrived in Denver, NC at the Cross Country RV Park. This park is about 3 miles from Arlene & Dick's ( Liz's aunt & uncle) who we planned to visit for 3 days.   Friday night we had dinner with them at Midtown Sundries.

March 30, 2013 on Saturday Dick & Gary drove around Charlotte visiting race shops while Arlene took Liz to her favorite consignment shops....a big business in this area.   Saturday night we had dinner at their house and watched the Syracuse basketball game.

March 31, 2013 They graciously invited us to share Easter dinner with them, and their daughter Jenny and her boyfriend Robby.   Joining us were their dogs..Zeke, and their two chihuahuas, Kokomo & Nellie and Jenny's chihuahua Zoe.
