SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS FEBRUARY 2, 2014

On our way to San Antonio we stopped in Edinburgh, TX to tour the Museum of South Texas History.

This is the main entrance of the museum..it was a beautiful, informative museum.

As we continued our journey we had to stop at Border Control to be sure we weren't carrying any illegal immigrants or drugs.   This would be the first of many such stops.

SAN ANTONIO!!

These 3 photos are all different views of the river walk in San Antonio.
Mary, Bill and Liz climbing stairs on the river walk headed to the Alamo.
The Alamo---we toured it but were not allowed to take any pictures inside..so this is what you get.

Dancers in Market Square.

We had dinner at Tomatillo's with Bill & Mary. We can't remember what the name of Gary's soup was (picture below), but it was enough to feed a family of four!

Buckhorn Museum in San Antonio

Inside the Buckhorn Museum.

In the 1700s five missions were established along the San Antonio River by the Spaniards to extend its dominion northward from New Spain ( present-day Mexico).  Discipline- religious, social and moral- was the essence of the mission system.   All five can be visited and 4 are still active parishes.  We visited the Alamo and the Mission San Jose.  We took an excellent tour with a National Park Ranger at the Mission San Jose.
A section of the mission coutyard...homes of the Coahuiltecan Indians that were being converted spiritually are on the right and the church and homes of the Franciscan Monks are in the background.

A closer view of the church.

The whiter area above is the remainder of the original face of the church at the Mission.

Don't we all look happy after our lunch?
Before we left San Antonio we had to visit Beto's which was Mary's favorite restaurant.  They are famous for their dessert empanadas...they were good!   This is also a restaurant that Guy Fieri visited on his show "Diners, Dives and Drive-ins".
Before we left San Antonio we took a trip north to Austin on this maze of roads.

Our goal was to see the Circuit of America  Formula One track...here is the first turn.  This is the only Formula One track in the U.S.   There used to be a Formula One race track in Watkins Glen, NY and Gary went to many of the races there in the 1970s.

On our way back to San Antonio, we stopped at Black's Barbecue in Lockhart, TX .   Lockhart is 20 miles south of Austin and is known as the barbecue capital of Texas. This is also another restaurant that Guy Fieri visited on his "Diner, Dives and Drive-ins" show on Food Network. We each had the baby back ribs and they were delicious!!
