Alaskan Highway – Watson Lake ( Days Three & Four)

June 9 Saturday & June 10 Sunday Not much news here in Watson Lake. We are still here along with everyone that has driven up from the south since Wednesday – approximately 100 tractor trailers trying to get food & fuel north and approximately 400 RVs headed north. We are comfortable here....Gary is watching the NASCAR race as I type this and he has Fox News for lively conversations! The grocery store is well stocked because the trucks are all sitting here! I have been busy at the laundromat which is one of the hotspots of activity! But now my laundry is done so I am strolling around the RV park like everyone else visiting. People are great and are finding ways to entertain themselves with card games, group meals and talking about when the road will open which is the only road north suitable for RV travel. We have heard that there is a meeting today to decide whether to build a temporary road instead of focusing on repairs at this point.

We have included some pictures we took of pictures of the road from the air so you can see the problem that we are facing here. Click on the pictures for better viewing & to read notations.

  1. what does this road wash out do to the schedule you had in place? will that effect meeting the boys? Sounds like you guys are making the best of it and at least you have a comfortable place to be stranded!

    1. We meet the boys in Anchorage on June 22, so I think we are still okay with that deadline...other than that we don't have a lot of "scheduled" things. Just a list of things to do and see. The weather here the past few days has been beautiful...today it is about 80 degrees! The local high school went around with flyers today...they are having a chili dinner tonight at the HS and a movie, donations only. I think that is really nice. A truck drove through the RV park today with a sign advertising a garage sale. Local businesses (there are only a few) are extending their hours to accommodate stranded travelers. Town has been real nice. And, I can play words with friends...how great is that??

  2. Sounds like the unexpected parts of this adventure are the best! By the way, I'm reading the "Bucolic Plague" (written by one of the Beekman Boys)-it's really cute). So glad you are getting the warm weather & getting to meet new people.

  3. I bought that book when we were in Sharon Springs...but haven't read it yet! Good to know it is a good read...probably will read it when I get home. I just finished "Black Heels to Tractor Wheels" by Rhee Drummond...she is a cook on the Food Network who goes by the name Pioneer Woman..a city girl who now lives on a big cattle ranch -- it was a very funny read...I highly recommend it. Also read recently "The Other Boleyn Girl" loved it! Did you see the movie? I haven't but heard it is good.

  4. This sounds like rush hour traffic in Anchorage whenever something goes awry... avalanche, accident, moose in road... We've got one road north and one road south out of the city. If either one has to close for something, you end up with a lot of people confined to their vehicles for hours on end! Good times!

  5. It hasn't been bad so far...not too bad to be stuck in the RV with full hookups. But boy once we all get on the road I think it will be slow going! We heard this morning that they are going to build a "pioneer" road around the washout...you probably know what that is from your Anchorage life, but, just in case, I understand that is a single lane dirt road used as a bypass. Rumor has it that the road may open this afternoon, but we are re-upping at this campground for one more night as we know all supply trucks will be first out and then people who have more pressing schedules than we do at the moment. It will be nice to be back on the road...we were having such a good time enjoying the scenery and wildlife as we traveled. Thanks for keeping in touch with us...it's a good to feel connected beyond Watson Lake.
