A Day in Jasper

Village of Jasper

June 4 Monday Headed into the village of Jasper this morning to do a few errands: mail postcards, buy stamps, update the blog and get a haircut for Liz.  As we walked down main street we noticed an unusual driver (see 2nd picture)

Lenient licensing policies in Canada?

What do you think of this Pat?

Beautiful day, so we decided to drive out to Patricia Lake to eat a picnic lunch.

Maligne lake
Then we headed to Maligne Lake which is about an hour from the village. Maligne is the largest and deepest lake in Jasper National Park.  On our way back from the lake we made a stop at Medicine Lake when we realized there was yet another black bear! After snapping pictures of the bear and other picture takers, we drove on to Maligne Canyon. The Maligne River plunges 76ft into a narrow, steep-walled gorge of limestone bedrock. We took pictures but they really don't capture the depth of this canyon.

Yet another black bear!

Elk is in the upper right
As we arrived home, in our campsite was a large, female elk calmly resting near a pine tree. We weren't sure if we should get out of the car, but we did slowly and it didn't seem to phase her as we unloaded the car and climbed into the motorhome. For the next hour, we had the opportunity to take many pictures of her...a couple we are sharing here.We thought maybe she had settled in to have a calf....wouldn't that been quite a post for our blog?

  2. Terry, We have been surprised to see as many bears and especially the grisly bear that was walking along the side of the road. There are a lot of wild animals in Banff and Jasper, Canadian National Parks.

    1. Thanks John! The blog has been fun to do and a great way to stay connected to home. Also, this will probably be our best documented trip ever...usually have a ton of photos at the end of a trip and then it is a hassle to sort through everything for the highlights. Hope you keep checking out our blog! Enjoy your summer! Liz & Gary

  7. Terry , Yes the motor home and Jeep need washing. However, there are more muddy roads to come. In fact we just found out the road North is closed due to mud slides. We will hunker down tonight and check in the AM on the road status.
