GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

May 31 Thursday  We started our day in Glacier Park by driving up the Going-to-the-Sun Road after watching two short videos at the park's visitor center telling about the road and the park in general.  The road is normally about a 50 mile drive from beginning to end and about 25 miles in you reach the summit at approximately 6700 ft.   It is a very scenic drive, but, unfortunately due to the time of year we were only able to go 13 miles because there is still snow past that point.  However, about 6 miles into the drive we saw a black bear right at the edge of the road!   And here he is!

Entering Waterton
We also drove to Many Glacier and saw another black bear, bigger than the previous one. We found the views more spectacular than Going-to-the-Sun since we could only go so far there. However, we still could not get to the glacier...we have just hit this area a little too early in the season. We decided to cross the border into Canada and visit the Waterton Lakes National Park –which is the Canadian portion of Glacier Park. The two parks together are referred to as Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Red Rock Canyon

The village of Waterton was very quaint & picturesque ….we found a nice restaurant, Trappers Mountain Grill, where we had fish & chips at a leather covered table. It was good, but still not as good as Doug's Fish Fry in Cortland! We asked the waitress for a suggestion of what to to see and she suggested Red Rock Canyon. It was 30 minute drive on a rough, twisty paved road, but it was absolutely beautiful once we reached it.

    1. Bear spray is current and we have it readily available! Really appreciate your comments and knowing that you are reading our blog! Since WIFI isn't always handy...we write up the blogs and pick the pictures in the evenings and save them to word files, then when we get somewhere that has WIFI we cut and paste. Hope all is good in your world! Gary R.

    1. Tom, You will find many good ideas to see and experience from the iRV2 website in your travels to Alaska. We planned our trip for 4 years. It started when we saw a video of an Alaskan trip at the Hershey RV show. From there we used the iRV2 website and Motor Home Magazine articles. I would strongly encourage you to get the DVD set of RVing the Alaskan Highway. We used it to plan and viewed it as we traveled the Highway and in Alaska to ensure we did see all that we wanted. We used RV Adventure Videos with John Holod Productions DVDs. You can see all their DVDs at the following website:

      http://www.rvadventurevideos.com/

These are excellent and we use then for planning our trips.

Safe travels and THE JOY IS IN THE RIDE
