NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI JANUARY 9, 2014

Entering the southern entrance of the Trace with the car today so we could visit other points of interest that are not really accessible via RV.

First stop: Milepost 41.5 Sunken Trace

Picnic at Sunken Trace

Gary is standing in the Sunken Trace section..This was originally worn down by animals and then people 12 - 15ft. as they traveled back from Natchez to Nashville.  It is apparent how easily outlaws could ambush travelers moving along the path.

Milepost 30.0 Windsor Ruins--this was the sight of an antebellum mansion built between 1859 and 1861.  The four story mansion had 25 rooms with 25 fireplaces, and attic water tanks supplied water to the interior baths.  Unfortunately a fire caused by an accidentally dropped cigarette on Feb. 17, 1890 destroyed all but these remaining columns.  These ruins have been immortalized in several films, including "Raintree County" with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

Driving on a short section of the original trace.

Just a short trip into present time...Gary found these drag strip markings on a bridge reached by a side road off the parkway.

Ahhh....back to the peaceful Natchez Trace Parkway.

Milepost 15.5 Mount Locust - of the 50 or so primitive hostelries established along the Trace before 1820, only Mt. Locust remains. It is one of the oldest buildings in Mississippi dating back to 1780.  Mount Locust was a one day walk from Natchez and Andrew Jackson reportedly stayed here twice. We were lucky to have an interpretative ranger on site to give us a very informative tour.

Section of the original trace that led to the house.
